What the Video Liberty project is: The main goal for the Video Liberty project is to give makers of original videos the opportunity to find video content that they can legally use in their own projects at no cost, as well as to give them an easy way for them to share their original footage for others to use at no cost.
What the Video Liberty project is not: The Video Liberty project is not any of these:
- A video sharing site (e.g., YouTube, Google Video, etc.) - these are destination sites which are designed to display finished video products to new audiences.
- A video channel service (e.g., VideoBomb) - these are destination sites which are designed to display finished video products, collected from multiple sources and organized into cohesive groups akin to channels on TV.
- A video distribution/publication service (e.g., Revver) - these sites are designed to provide video creators with a mechanism for finished video products to be integrated into blogs, channel services, regular Web sites, etc.
A key element of these other sites is that they generally or exclusively deal with finished video products. The content handled by the Video Liberty project is more likely to be the "raw materials" from which finished video products can be created. This typically means higher resolution but with less (or no) editing.
One other distinction: The Video Liberty project is not for hosting video files. There are other sites for that purpose. In the same way that you don't get a haircut from the Yellow Pages but you can use the Yellow Pages to find a barber, you won't download video content from the Video Liberty project but you can use it to find video to download.
Who the Video Liberty project is for: Since the main goal is not to watch videos, the people who will be most interested in the Video Liberty project will be those involved in some way with creating video content. This includes videographers, writers, musicians, photographers, and other original content creators and editors. This is a narrower audience, but it is one that is motivated to be actively involved and one that is not fully served by sites handling finished video products.
